Commanders Comments - February 2010

Commander Comments

As you may have heard there is a scheduled Honor Flight scheduled for May that will take WWll Veteran’s to Washington D.C. free of charge.  It is in the planning stage but those Veterans that wish to go should apply at the earliest possible date.  If you want to go or know someone that would like to go please contact me at the February membership meeting so that we can get the application to you.  Plans include free flight and caregiver/guide from Houston to Washington.  The day will primarily be to see the WWll Memorial but will also include viewing of the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Wall, the changing of the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown and Arlington National Cemetery.  It will be a long day but surely will be a day that the members of the Greatest Generation will remember for the rest of their lives.  Please if you are a Veteran of WWll or know of one that would like to go get your application as soon as possible.  April the 9th there will be a concert fundraiser held at the Bryan Civic Center and will feature the Concert and Symphonic Bands from Texas A&M will provide the Patriotic entertainment.  It will also include your Post Honor Guard which will conduct Military Honors at the conclusion of the event.

Our February Membership Meeting will be a Meet the Candidates Political Forum where local politicians will be given time to introduce themselves and give a brief statement of their positions regarding the upcoming Elections.  This meeting will not be open to the general public and attendance is restricted to members of Earl Graham Post 159.  We will meet at 1800 hrs for refreshments and a meal will be served at 1900 hrs with the program to follow.  Legionnaire L. G. Crum will serve as the forum leader to insure that each speaker will not take more than his or her allotted time.  Please make Plans to attend this meeting to meet the candidates.

It has been reported to me that 25 pounds of canned goods were provided in December to the food Pantry.  Thanks to all that participated in that effort.

I want to take this opportunity to encourage you as Legionnaires to listen carefully to the upcoming discussions with regard to our establishment of a Post Riders Group.  The Riders are officially a program of the American Legion and to my mind an asset that Post 159 should proudly support.  We must include more Veteran’s activities in our legion efforts in order for the post to grow.  I can assure you that any group established at Post 159 will be Legionnaires first and Riders second.  I see this Riders program as an asset to the Post in terms of fundraisers as well as visibility in the Brazos Valley.

I look forward to seeing you at our General membership meeting on February 4th.

Gary M. Banta

Commander
