The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags is outlined in Resolution No. 440, passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, Sept. 20-23, 1937. The ceremony has been an integral part of American Legion ritual since that date.
Post 159 has a drop off bin (mailbox in front of the post painted red white and blue) to collect unserviceable flags. On June 14 - Flag Day each year, the Post hosts a public Flag Disposal Ceremony jointly with Boy Scout Troop 159 to observe the proper respect for the Flag of our country and the education of our citizenry about the proper courtesies to be paid the Flag. Post 159 properly disposes of between 500 and 600 flags each year after inspecting each individually.
