Why should you be a member of the American Legion?

1.    You would be a member of one of the largest and most distinguished Veterans Organizations.

2.    Your membership would help influence Congress....

       a.  The American Legion has in place a National President whose job is to lobby for Veterans.  We would like to name all, but here are a few examples:
Increased military pay and concurrent receipt of military longevity, retirement and VA disability compensation.

  • Improved access to VA health care facilities
  • Military readiness issues
  • Needed improvements in TRICARE and VA medical care
  • Provide VA disability benefits and heal care for veterans with Hepatitis C, radiation, diabetes related to Agent Orange, and Gulf War illnesses.
  • Flag protection
  • Annual benefits (i.e. COLAs)
  • Restore veterans' right to compensation for tobacco-related illnesses
  • Employment services and transition assistance for veterans and for active duty personnel
  • Improved Montgomery GI Bill education benefits
  • Reduction of claims backlog

       b.  The more members we have, the louder our voices are.

3.    The American Legion also has national and local programs to provide tempory financial assistance to veterans and their families.  Our Family Support Network helps families of deployed service members.  Other programs focus on education, safety, drug awareness, scouting, baseball, volunteerism, oratorical competition, Boys and Girls State, and the flag.  There is something for everyone.

4.    You will receive a National American Legion magazine once a month
5.    You will receive an American Legion paper from the Department of Texas quarterly.
6.    You will receive a newsletter from our post once a month.
7.    We meet once a month on the first Thursday of each month for stimulating conversation and dining.
8.    We have three parties a year with dining and dancing.  Always fun.
9.    Post 159 has a very distinguished Honor Guard, including a Rifle Firing Squad and Color Guard, who are kept very busy with community,  school activities and ceremonies including funerals.
